Our patron Mr. Bernard Kalume Buleri is the founder and head of our NGO Stop Human Trafficking (SHUT) Foundation.
Born in 1960 in Eastern Congo, the year of independence of the country, he has been a first-hand witness to the challenges of the region, also experienced the depths of emotional trauma which has plagued the zone since the independence of the DRC. He first witnessed civil war in 1967.
After his university studies, he had to migrate to Rwanda for employment and became a musician.
Whilst in Rwanda, he got caught up in the 1994 genocide, where he had to pay $5 to Interahamwe militants to kill his Tutsi wife with two bullets, instead of using clubs and machetes.
On his return to the Congo, he worked as a public relations officer for the UN organization MONUSCO, a role which saw him communicate with a range of factions and parties, from the local population to rebel groups on behalf of the UN.
After resigning from the UN, Mr. Buleri spent many years acting as a fixer for international journalists who wanted to cover topics and make documentary films on Eastern Congo.
He has now decided to dedicate his life to assisting the most vulnerable in the society.
